AFPL Stop 4 Preview: Midseason Tournament Chaos, Jake Bower's Snub, and 5 Subs Fighting for Their Careers (Pro League This Week Ep. 8)

The All Florida Pro League is about to hit the most unpredictable day on its calendar. This Saturday, all eight teams head to DNA Pickleball in Fort Myers for the Stop 4 Midseason Tournament, and on this week's episode of Pro League This Week, hosts Hugh Green and David Tabb break down everything you need to know before first serve, from a wave of last-minute substitutions to the fantasy picks they're staking their pride on.

Five Subs, One Last Chance Before the Waiver Wire

The midseason always brings roster shakeups, and this year is no exception. Five substitutes are stepping onto the court this weekend, and every one of them knows the stakes: win, and you might just play your way onto a permanent roster before the waiver wire opens right after the tournament wraps.

Sam Gabet steps in for BK on the O-Town Bangers again. On the Sarasota Manatees, Caden Salefsky comes in for Myles Call and Sable Yrjanson fills in for Adalynn Lund, meaning Christian Lund has to find brand-new mixed doubles chemistry with a partner he's never played alongside in a real match, after a lifetime of playing with his own sister. The two live on opposite ends of the state and will get exactly one practice session together before Saturday.

Anton Betita jumps in for Jake Bower on the Miami Blaze, and Madelyn Porter subs in for Arielle Nealy on the Punta Gorda Tide, who is dealing with a family matter the show wished her well through. As Hugh points out, the midseason is uniquely valuable for subs because every captain and owner in the league is watching at the same time, unlike a normal stop where only four teams are playing at a time. Perform well here, right before the waiver wire, and it's the best possible audition.

The subs storyline carries extra weight after Stop 3, where substitutes dominated the fantasy leaderboard. Emily Lewis put up the best fantasy stop of her season for the Bangers and still didn't get picked up for the midseason roster, a snub Hugh and David both called one of the bigger surprises of the year.

Jake Bower's World Cup Snub Has David Fired Up

Before diving into the bracket, Hugh had to get something off his chest: Jake Bower, one of the most decorated players in AFPL history and a cornerstone of the Miami Blaze, was left off the USA World Cup team roster. David didn't hold back, calling it "an absolute travesty" given Bower's track record leading teams and closing out matches on the international stage. It's a tough break for Bower.

Format, Points, and $1,600 on the Line

Unlike a regular season stop, the midseason is a race-to-three format with no consolation games, so every mixed and gender doubles match matters immediately. All eight teams are seeded by season standings into a single-elimination bracket, with the top seed facing the eighth seed right out of the gate, but Hugh and David were quick to point out the eighth seed is loaded this year and nobody should sleep on a first-round upset.

History is on the side of chaos. It's typically a three, four, or five seed that gets bounced early, and the Miami Blaze, the current third seed, have a reputation as slow starters. Lose in the winners bracket, though, and it isn't over. Every team drops into the back draw, which still pays real standings points and prize money through the bronze medal match. First place takes home $1,600, a payday Hugh and David agreed makes for a can't-miss finals.

Standout Players and Fantasy Sleepers to Watch

On the fantasy side, David and Hugh revealed their picks for the weekend. Hugh is riding with Anton Betita, Michael Shaw, Sofia Manzanares, Alexa Quintanilla, and the Jacksonville Ballers, while David went with Kamden Bradstreet, Ava Pisacrita, Sam Gabbitt, Ellie Skingley, and the Miami Blaze. David's dark horse MVP call is Ava Pisacrita, who he thinks could put up huge numbers for the GNV Chomp coming off a break. Alexa Quintanilla, meanwhile, remains the show's safest pick after a season that's made a strong case for her as the league's best women's player.

The episode also featured a full interview with Sam Gabet, who talked through his path from playing pickleball with his siblings during COVID to walking away from college baseball at Florida Southern to chase it full time. Now in his second AFPL season and subbing again this year, Gabet was direct about what it takes to get noticed before the waiver wire: win the points in front of you, and let the results speak.

Looking Ahead

Once the confetti settles in Fort Myers, the league turns immediately to the waiver wire, and every performance this weekend will shape who's available and in demand. Hugh's hot take has the Bangers pulling off a first-round upset and fighting for hardware, while David is calling a bronze medal match run for the GNV Chomp. Either way, expect the standings to look different by Sunday.
