From Local 5.0 to Real Pro: The All Florida Pro League Pathway
How the All Florida Pro League bridges the gap between high-level player and true professional
There’s a level of pickleball where things get complicated.
You’re dominating local tournaments and feel like you have what it takes, but you’re not yet breaking through pro qualifiers on a regular basis. You train hard, you travel, you compete, but the expenses are adding up and the results aren't what you want.
The All Florida Pro League was built specifically for players in that space.
The Player Journey Starts With an Application
Each year, the journey begins in February, when players apply for an invite to the combine.
Applications aren’t just a formality. They’re reviewed with the goal of identifying players who are ready for:
- High-pressure competition
- Team-based environments
- Professional development on and off the court
Not every applicant is accepted, and that’s intentional. The league is built around competitive balance and development.
The Combine: Where Players Are Evaluated and Discovered
Players who are accepted move on to the AFPL Combine.
This isn't just a place for players to get evaluated, many players haven't played pro qualifiers or other local tournaments and may not be known in the community as an up and coming pro. This is their chance to make an impression on the captains and showcase their skills.
At the combine:
- Players meet captains and eligible players
- They play in multiple formats
- Skills, adaptability, communication, and court presence are evaluated
- Captains get to see how players respond to unfamiliar partners and pressure
This isn’t about winning games. It’s about showing that you can compete, adjust, and perform in a professional team setting.
Only players invited to the combine are eligible for the draft.
The Live Draft: Pressure Before the Season Even Starts
After the combine comes one of the most intense moments in the entire process: the live draft (Check out the Season 2 Draft).
The draft is streamed live. Captains are on the spot, selecting players in rapid rounds while everyone watches, trying to match play styles and personalities after the player they had their eyes on gets picked and the draft board goes out the window.
Each captain drafts four players (2 males and 2 females) to form their roster. These four players become the starting lineup for the season.
There’s no hiding in this moment:
- Players hear their names called in real time
- Captains commit publicly
- Expectations are set immediately
For drafted players, this is the official start of their AFPL season.
What Being Drafted Really Means
Getting drafted into the All Florida Pro League isn’t just about playing matches.
It means you’re representing your team at every stop. Your introduction and hands on experience to the professional pickleball scene begins
You’re no longer just playing matches and working on your game, you'll have to adapt and build chemistry with your teammates while under the spotlight
Learning to Perform Under Real Pressure
AFPL places players into situations that are hard to replicate anywhere else.
You’re competing:
- In front of fans
- On live streams broadcast to tens of thousands of viewers
- With teammates counting on you
- In matches where every game affects rankings
Learning to handle that pressure is one of the biggest steps toward becoming pro-ready. It’s where strong players either level up or get exposed.
Development Beyond the Court
In modern pickleball, skill alone isn’t enough.
AFPL introduces players to the business side of being a professional, including:
- Paid content opportunities with league partners
- Brand representation expectations
- Working within sponsorship frameworks
- Understanding how value is created beyond wins
Players begin learning how to carry themselves as professionals, not just competitors.
Preparing Players for What Comes Next
The goal of PB Pro Leagues isn’t just to crown champions. It’s to develop professionals.
AFPL gives players:
- A structured season
- Meaningful, high-stakes matches
- Team accountability
- Exposure to media, fans, and sponsors
For players stuck between “really good” and “ready for the big stage,” the All Florida Pro League offers something rare: a real pathway forward.
It’s not just about proving you can win.
It’s about proving you’re ready for everything that comes with being a professional.
