How to Get a DUPR Rating (and Why You Need One Before Our Events)

If you want to play in a Minor League Pickleball event at an All Florida Pro League stop, the AFPL Playoffs, or an AFPC tournament, you need a DUPR rating. Not sure what that means or how to get one? This page walks you through it. Bookmark it and send it to your teammates.

What is DUPR?

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is the rating system used across pickleball to measure skill. Your rating runs from 2.000 to 8.000 and updates from your actual match results. Until your first result is entered, your profile shows NR (Not Rated).

  • 2.000 to 2.999: Novice
  • 3.000 to 3.999: Intermediate
  • 4.000 to 4.999: Advanced
  • 5.000 to 8.000: Professional

You get separate ratings for singles and doubles, and DUPR keeps age-group ratings for 50+ players. Our team events use your doubles rating.

Next to your rating is a Reliability Score from 1 to 100%. It tells you how established your rating is. DUPR treats 60% or higher as reliable. It goes up as you log more matches against more people, and it slowly decays if you stop playing.

Why our events require it

Minor League Pickleball events, including the ones at AFPL stops, the AFPL Playoffs, and the AFPC series, are DUPR-verified events. That means:

  • You need a DUPR account when you register.
  • You need an active DUPR+ membership ($29.99 a year or $2.99 a month, with a 7-day free trial). DUPR requires it for all verified events. Sign up at dupr.com/duprplus.
  • Divisions are set by your team's combined DUPR (the sum of all four players' doubles ratings), with a cap for each division. Check the event listing for the exact divisions and caps.
  • Your rating locks the moment you join your team, sign the waiver, and pay. Get rated before you register, not after.
  • Unrated players can still play, but the tournament director will verify their estimated rating. A real rating is better for you and for your bracket.

Step 1: Create (or claim) your account

  1. Check for an existing account first at dashboard.dupr.com/claim. If you have played a tournament before, a director may have already created a profile for you. Claim it instead of making a duplicate.
  2. Download the DUPR app (iOS or Android) or go to dupr.com and tap Sign Up.
  3. Fill in the form. Enter your location as City, State and pick the option that auto-suggests.
  4. Verify your email from the link DUPR sends you, then come back to the app and tap Already Verified.
  5. Find your DUPR ID under Profile > Settings. Tournament directors and clubs use it to find you.

Step 2: Get your first result on the books

One valid match result is all it takes to go from NR to rated. There are three ways to do it.

Option A: Play a DUPR-reported league, DUPR night, or tournament. This is the best option. The facility or organizer sends results straight to DUPR, and those verified results carry the most weight. Look for anything labeled DUPR league, DUPR night, DUPR round robin, or "scores entered into DUPR."

Option B: Get a Coach-Assigned rating from a DUPR Coach. No matches needed. A credentialed DUPR Coach runs a single skills assessment, in person or from game video, and assigns an official rating on the spot. Sessions are usually small-group doubles play and coaches typically charge around $35 per player. Coach-Assigned ratings are for non-rated players only. Find a coach near you at duprcoach.com/coach-locations.

Option C: Log a rec game in the app. Grab three people who have DUPR accounts, play a game, and record it:

  1. In the DUPR app, tap the + icon in the top right and choose Match.
  2. Add the players. For doubles, add your partner first, then your opponents.
  3. Pick the format (single game or best of 3), enter the scores, and add the location.
  4. Submit. Every other player gets a notification and taps confirm. Once everyone validates, the match counts and you are rated.

Self-reported rec matches count, but they move your rating less than club, league, and tournament results. Use them to get started, then get into verified play.

Step 3: Make your rating reliable

  • Aim for 10 to 20 logged matches. One match gives you a rating; 10 to 20 make it accurate.
  • Play different partners and opponents at your level, with a mix of wins and losses in close games.
  • Prioritize club, league, and tournament matches, and play against people who already have high reliability.
  • Keep playing. Reliability decays with inactivity.

How your rating moves

Every match has an expected score based on all four players' ratings. Beat the expectation and your rating goes up, even in a loss. Underperform and it can go down, even in a win. Recent matches count more than old ones, verified matches count more than self-reported ones, and best-of-3 matches move your rating more than single games. Playing with unrated or low-reliability players has a smaller effect on your rating, so there is no reason to avoid newcomers.

Quick answers

My results from an event have not shown up yet. Organizers have up to 48 hours to submit verified results. Check your match history before assuming something is missing.

I cannot find a player when adding a match. They need a DUPR account. Have them sign up, then search again.

I have two profiles. DUPR support can merge them. Go to the DUPR Help Center and search "duplicate account."

Do I need DUPR+ just to have a rating? No. The account and the rating are free. DUPR+ is required to play in DUPR-verified events, which includes ours.
