Waiver Wire Fallout and a Loaded Jacksonville: Pro League This Week Episode 11 Recap (AFPL Stop 4 Preview)

The dust has finally settled on the wildest waiver wire period in All Florida Pro League history, and if Episode 11 of Pro League This Week made one thing clear, it is this: the road to the season three title just got a whole lot harder for everybody.

The League Has Evened Out

The theme of the week came straight from David: the teams at the bottom have made their moves, and there is no easy rolling left for anyone. The GNV Chomp and Punta Gorda Tide, sitting seventh and eighth, both rebuilt on the fly. Caden Salefsky joins the Tide, Sam Gabet and Carlos Subero give the Chomp a brand new look, and the Lakeland Palms added Madelyn Porter and Eli Curls. Add in the season's second trade, Hanna Duncan to the Tide for Arielle Nealy to the St Pete Iceburgs, and nearly half the league heads to Jacksonville with new faces.

Here is the kicker: nobody has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Two stops remain, the top two seeds earn a bye past the first round, and every standings point in Jacksonville matters. The hosts agreed that neither pool will see a sweep, and both could come down to game win percentage or a dream breaker.

One sub of note for Stop 4: Christian Franke steps in for Jake Bower with the Miami Blaze. Bower is overseas chasing pro tour opportunities, which David called the whole mission of the league, and he will be back for the final stop and the finals. Franke, a collegiate national champion who went undrafted, arrives with a chip on his shoulder and a smile that should fool nobody.

Jay Evans and the Pool of Death

The interview chair belonged to Jay Evans this week, captain of the O-Town Bangers and one of the most respected racket sports lifers in the league. Evans went from Tampa high school tennis to college coaching to running pickleball at the Pickleball Academy in Tampa Bay, and his coaching DNA shows in how he manages his roster.

His Jacksonville draw? The morning pool with the top two seeds, which Evans immediately dubbed the pool of death. His goal is simple: towel off around 2pm, win the pool, and set up for the stop finals. After a bronze medal at the midseason tournament, his message was all confidence: the Bangers have beaten or taken a dream breaker off every team in the league. Nobody is terrifying, but everybody is scary.

Evans also delivered the soundbite of the episode. Asked which afternoon pool team will shock the world, he did not hesitate: give me GNV. Bulletin board material officially posted.

Standout Players and MVP Talk

The early MVP conversation is heating up. On the women's side, Alexa Quintanilla of the Jacksonville Ballers is running away with it, holding the highest winning percentage in the league across women's doubles, mixed and singles. On the men's side it is a two horse race between her teammate Ahmad El-Zarif and the Iceburgs' Kamden Bradstreet, with Stephen Preissler, Christian Lund and Jake Bower all getting honorable mentions. The wild part: El-Zarif was a fourth-round pick nobody had on their radar. A fourth rounder taking home MVP would be the ultimate Cinderella story.

Fantasy Pickleball presented by 1-800-Ask-Dave is back for Stop 4. Hugh is riding Sam Gabet, Emanuel Dickson, Arielle Nealy, Adalynn Lund and the Lakeland Palms. David went with new team energy with Nicolas Almeida, Michael Shaw, Ellie Skingley, Andi Godwin and the Sarasota Manatees, with at least one pick decided by a selfie in Macon. Take a selfie with David, get picked. That is the meta now.

Looking Ahead

Jacksonville is shaping up to be the most electric stop in league history. The hometown angle is real: Myles Call reps UNF, Michael Shaw returns to his home courts, and Sam Gabet and Madelyn Porter carry the Northeast Florida flag. The Iceburgs, fresh off a humbling midseason, get Bruce back on the sideline and Arielle Nealy in the lineup as they chase their first win over the Ballers this season. And the rebuilt Tide and Chomp have exactly two stops to turn moves into wins.
