What Is MiLP v3?

MiLP v3 is the three-player team format with a tight, high-energy weekend feel. Gendered teams run three men or three women. Mixed teams run two men and one woman. A matchup is three games to 21 with MiLP rally scoring and win by two. Every player plays exactly two games. No partnership repeats. There is no DreamBreaker. The three games decide the matchup.

Many players love v3 because every game matters and nobody is a permanent spectator. You compete with a compact team, rotate partners, and cheer hard from the sidelines in the one game you sit. That combination of on-court stakes and bench energy is a big reason MiLP feels more fun than regular doubles for a lot of athletes.

AFPC weekends use this format. Saturday is gender divisions. Sunday is mixed. Both days are MiLP v3.

Team of three: sideline energy and partner rotation

v3 removes the fourth player and the safety of a repeated duo. With three on the roster, each athlete appears in two of the three games. There is nowhere to hide a weak pairing and no way to ride one dominant partnership through the set.

That design rewards versatility, and it also creates a unique team rhythm. You play with one partner, then watch that partner compete with someone else while you fuel the fence. Next game, you are back on with a new combination. The partner rotation is part of the fun. So is the job of being the loudest teammate when you are the one sitting.

Teams that practice all three combinations arrive ready and connected. Teams that only trust one pair often leave points on the table and miss the joy of building chemistry across the whole trio.

Gendered v3: 3M or 3W and the P1+P2 / P2+P3 / P1+P3 rotation

A gendered v3 team is three men or three women. The partnerships are fixed by the no-repeat rule:

  • P1 + P2
  • P2 + P3
  • P1 + P3

Label your players before the weekend. Know who opens, who bridges the middle game, and who closes. Because each player sits one game, energy management and order strategy matter. The player who sits game one still has to deliver in games two and three with different partners, and still has a job on the sidelines in the game they watch.

Practice all three pairings. Film transitions. Decide who handles serve pressure in each combination. Gendered v3 is simple on paper and demanding in live play. It is also a blast when the trio trusts every rotation.

Mixed v3: 2M+1W and a locked match order

A mixed v3 team is two men and one woman. Match order is locked:

  1. Men's doubles
  2. Mixed doubles (first combination)
  3. Mixed doubles (second combination)

Men's doubles comes first. Then both mixed games. The woman plays the two mixed games. Each man plays men's doubles plus one mixed game. No partnership repeats, so the two mixed combinations use different male partners with the same woman.

Role clarity from the first serve is mandatory. The men's opener sets tone. The mixed games decide whether the series closes 2-1 or goes the distance. Practice that order, not a random mixed rotation. Between games, keep the team loud. In a three-player format, the person off the court is still half the vibe.

Three games to 21. Every game matters. No DreamBreaker.

Each v3 game goes to 21 under MiLP rally scoring with win by two. A point follows every rally. Server or receiver can score. The clinching point must be won on serve. If receivers would clinch while receiving, the point is temporarily frozen. Trailing teams never freeze. At 20-all and beyond, rally scoring stays on.

There is no DreamBreaker in v3. A 2-1 result ends the matchup. That is the format intensity for v3: three high-stakes games, every player in two, no singles rescue. A slow start is harder to erase. A late collapse has no DreamBreaker backup. The upside is nonstop urgency. The series never drifts. The bench never checks out.

AFPC weekends run v3

AFPC structure:

  • Saturday: gender divisions (3M or 3W teams)
  • Sunday: mixed divisions (2M+1W teams)

Both days use MiLP v3. Build the correct roster for the day you enter. Do not show up with a four-player traditional plan for a three-player v3 listing. Bring a trio that wants to compete hard and enjoy the shared fight.

How to prepare for v3

Gendered teams: lock P1, P2, P3 labels. Practice P1+P2, P2+P3, and P1+P3 until each pairing has a clear pattern under pressure.

Mixed teams: rehearse men's doubles, then both mixed combinations in that order. Confirm who sits which mixed game and how the woman transitions between male partners.

All v3 teams: drill rally scoring finishes. Call the score. Know who is serving. Rehearse freeze situations so nobody assumes a receive can clinch. Also rehearse sideline habits. In v3, the player off court is still part of the team experience.

v3 is tighter by design. Three players. Three games. No repeats. No DreamBreaker. High stakes, loud benches, and a weekend many players prefer to regular doubles.
